Ishika Malhotra
Staring at the bathroom mirror while brushing my teeth, I couldn't help but giggle at the state of my almost coal-colored hair, which would be a perfect fit for a bird's nest. after finishing showering and styling my hair. I walked out of the bathroom with my towel wrapped around me to get dressed.
It's been more than a week that I've been training with the chief doctor here, Dr. Rudra Rathor. He's been amazing in helping me learn so much—the perfect mentor I could have asked for. Parking my car in the nearest spot to the hospital, I walked in, greeting the guards and other colleagues. With Rudra taking care of the older patients, I was assigned to the kids. They come to me with tear-stained faces and everything from bruises to broken bones. It was definitely a task to bring a smile to their innocent faces. As for what the nurses and other doctors told me, I have been doing a good job. Taming a child throwing a tantrum obviously wasn't my strongest point, but I still tried.
"Morning Ishika!" Rudra spoke up with a bright smile as I entered the chief doctor's office. "Hey morning, Rudra," I replied. Rudra was a few years my senior, but we became fast friends on the first day. He began sitting with me even during lunch and also happened to bring me coffee on most days. I had learned that Rudra had lost his wife in a car accident just a month after they married. During certain topics, you could still feel him mourning over his lost wife, so I tried my best to avoid the matter. "It's going to be a busy morning, I would say. "I have twelve appointments before lunch." He huffed.
"Well with kids, I only have three, but you never know when an emergency could happen." I shook my head. The kids had so much energy in them that they had to do all sorts of stunts for fun, and sadly a few ended up being badly injured. Bringing me out of my thoughts, we heard a huge wail from the corridors, and I knew what was going to happen. Rudra raised his eyes from a report he was studying, and I picked up the stethoscope in preparation for what's to come. The scream grew louder as a woman entered the office with a child no older than six years old, covered in mud from head to toe and with a cut on his calf. "Doctor, my son fell off the tree and hurt his leg." The mother spoke worriedly. "Okay, let me take a look at it." I began walking towards the boy when he let out a shrill scream, making me and the nurses wince. "DON'T COME NEAR ME, YOU GHOST!" He yelled again. What a way to start the morning, eh? Rudra chuckled as he left me alone. Giving a glance at his disappearing figure, I turned to the kid. "Monish, that's not how you talk to a doctor," the mother said strictly. "Ma, she's a ghost. Look, she's wearing white.. please take me home," he said, pointing to my lab coat. "Okay Monish, I'm not a ghost." I simply took off my lab coat and placed it on the office chair. The kid stopped crying and watched my every move so carefully. I gave him a smile, walked behind the desk, and pulled out a lollipop for him. "Here you go, big man, now would you come with me?" I offered him the candy, which he eyed suspiciously before looking at his mom for permission. As soon as she nodded, he took it and looked up at me. "Come!" I held out my hand, and he placed his hand in mine. We walked into the kid's ward as a nurse followed me. The nurse swiftly picked up Monish, laid him on the bed, and began cleaning up the mud around his leg. "He must be a handful..." I spoke to the mother as I put my gloves on. "Oh my..." she shook her head, not being able to put into words how naughty her son could be. I let out a small laugh and turned towards Monish. Inspecting the wound, I noticed that it had to be stitched and covered up, which would heal in a couple weeks.
Abhimanyu Oberoi
Currently, I was driving to one of my cottages with Sarah to spend the day there since she wasn't happy about how busy my life had gotten after becoming CEO. All through the drive, she spoke about the diamonds and rubies she had bought at the auction. I could feel how excited she was about it, and that's what I needed: to keep my woman happy. "Boss, your mother almost fainted after having a headache since this morning. She refuses to see the doctor. Your father has already left for the South; if you could please convince her to come to the hospital," Jason, one of the mansion's guards, contacted me. Without thinking further, I drove the car towards my parents mansion. I had to see my mother. "Abhi?" Sarah questioned. "Mum isn't feeling well. I need to take her to the hospital." I replied, noticing her huff of disappointment, to which I didn't care.
"Mum!" I raised my voice, and in a minute she appeared out of the kitchen as if she was busy doing something. "Jason told me..." she cut me off. "Oh Abhimanyu, it's nothing, beta." I just felt a little dizzy, but I'm fine now! She beamed at me. I crossed my hands over my chest, not buying the bullshit she was saying. I gently took the apron off her and threw it at the nearest guards, then walked her towards the car. "abhi, I told you..." she tried to reason. "We're going to the hospital now." I opened the door for her to take a seat, which thankfully she did without another word. With Sarah still seated in the passenger seat, I took off to the hospital.
pulling into the enormous Hospital, which was built by my great, great grandfather. I parked the vehicle in front of the building, stepping out with mom, as Sarah remained in the car till we were done. The hospital was large and well-equipped for all of our needs, and we occasionally took in injured and ill guards from other groups who required better medical care. Gently grabbing my mother by her shoulder, I walked through the doors. Noticing our presence, the receptionist
walked towards us. "Boss," He bowed. Nodding towards his gesture, "who are the doctors on shift right now?" I inquired. "Right now, sir, there's Dr. Rathor and Dr. Malhotra." He stuttered. Malhotra? Dhruv's daughter. Assuming Mom would be more comfortable with a lady, "I'd like to see Dr. Malhotra." I placed my free hand in my pocket. "Yeah, sure, Boss." He rushed towards the corridor that led us to the chief doctor's office. "Oh Abhi, you scared the boy for no reason." Mother shook her head. "I did nothing." I shrugged. "Please, just smile when you talk to someone." She tried to look stern, to which I let out a smirk, eventually following the receptionist through the corridors.
Walking through the white and grey corridors, we took a turn to reach the office, and that's when I felt as if everything around me just froze in time.
Even as Mom was talking about something Dad did, my complete attention was focused on the faint but intoxicating smell of vanilla and something else so floral. I lifted my chin up to get a good sniff at the scent, and it was indeed vanilla and jasmine.
"Abhi?" My mom questioned my sudden behaviour. I began walking again, trying to hide my anxiousness about what I just felt. I hoped the faint, addictive scent would grow stronger, but to my surprise, I could only get a slight whiff of it.
I held Mum's hand and walked into the office. The fragrance was definitely stronger as we entered the office. Looking around, I spotted no one but Dr. Rathor . for some reason I was disappointed.
"Boss, what's brought you here?" Rudra spoke up with a broad smile. Standing from his seat, he walked up to us. "It's Mum," I said, looking down at her. "Lady." Rudra took her hand in his and led her to a seat near the desk. As she sat on the chair, I noticed the white lab coat laid on the vacant seats. While the doctor began to talk to mum, I picked up the lab coat, and even before I had to sniff it, the scent made me feel euphoric. Inhaling it like a drug, I smiled to myself.
Why am I being so weird? What's wrong with me?
Tightening my hold on the lab coat, I detected a shiny silver name tag. "Ishika Malhotra," it read as I eagerly flipped it over.
"Yes, the dizziness is because of low blood pressure levels." I heard their conversation, which caught my attention. Clearing my throat, I sat beside my mother. After the doctor prescribed some medication and requested a nurse to go grab them, we waited in the office till the prescriptions arrived.
On an ordinary day, the waiting would have made me impatient, but today I was hoping this mystery owner of the most intoxicating smell would show up in front of me. As time went on, I began feeling crabby; clutching onto the lab coat and taking one sniff of it calmed my nerves in an instant.
Gaining my composure, I noticed how Mom and Rudra were having a hearty conversation, which meant they didn't notice my act a second ago. Sighing in relief, I laid back on my chair as Rudra glanced at me with an apologetic smile.
"Boss apologises for the delay. She should be here soon." "She?" I straightened my back. "Um, the nurse." He nodded hesitantly. "Oh, yes, of course." I nodded stiffly.
"Abhi! Ugh!" Sarah walked in looking exhausted as hell. That's when I felt like I was awakened from my daze. "Oh, sorry, dear. just waiting for the prescription to arrive." Mom spoke as I looked up at my girlfriend.
"A few minutes, okay." I gave her a small smile as my mind was getting messed up by the thought of a scent. Somethings is so wrong with me.
"Fine!" She whines quickly, making herself comfortable on my lap. "Um Sarah?" I spoke quietly, "How about taking another chair?" I itched the back of my neck, feeling awkward at the position we were in in front of Mom and the doctor. "NO." She snuggled into my neck.
Watching the clock tick, the air began to fill with jasmine and vanilla The fragrance began getting stronger every second.
"Um Sarah, how about we stand up?" I tried to put her down, but she wouldn't budge. Damn it. I noticed how Mom rolled her eyes. Forgetting everything around me, my nose sniffed as the scent got stronger. The footsteps got closer, quickening their strides in the process. Wiping the sweat off my forehead, I waited till the approaching figure entered the office.
Her hazel eyes were wide, her pink, plump lips were slightly open, and she clutched a file to her chest as if for support. The black, luscious-looking hair ran tidily down to her waist. There she was the one who used to run around in cute frocks and piggy tails. My eyes glanced back to her face, but now her wide doe eyes seemed to have narrowed at me as she bit her bottom lip. She looked upset.
Reality hit me. I met the girl I had a crush on in my childhood after years with My girlfriend on my lap.
